Planning on downsizing house...?
You'll want to take some time to think about the best ways to prepare.
People downsize for all kinds of reasons, however, the process remains the same, be organised and give yourself plenty of time!
Things to consider before your move:
- Have the dimensions of each room in your new home (floor plan ideally)
- Focus on one room at a time (start small)
- Make an inventory (to see what you have to move)
- Have a vision of your new home, think about hobbies/lifestyle and what you want in each room and what could be put into storage
- Make the most of every piece of space by utilising capacity
- Sort/declutter "keep, throw, donate or store" boxes
- Reduce duplicate items, e.g. kitchenware
- Only keep what's frequently used
- Pack neatly labelling each box with the allocated new room
- What will fit and what large furniture needs to be replaced to downsize, e.g. a mini sofa, a fold-away dining table etc.
- Consider multi-functional furniture, e.g. sofa bed, storage cube seats, footstall coffee table etc.
- Condense sentimental items e.g. take photos of items and scan them to create a photo book of memories
- Consider installing hooks and shelves to store items in your new home
- Rent or borrow tools which are infrequently used, e.g. carpet cleaner
During the clearout process, sell items you no longer want which are valuable to put money toward moving costs and the new smaller multi-functional furniture.
If you remain organised and pack in a timely manner, you will reduce stress throughout the downsizing process.
