How can you help pets cope with moving day?

At Britannia Bennetts we know how important pets are and as we celebrate National Love Your Pet Day this month, we are looking at ways you can help your pet deal with your relocation and settle happily into their new home.

Before you Move

The sooner you can start preparing your pet for a house move the better. This will give them time to adjust to the change and reduce anxiety.

Try to visit your new area with your pet and make it fun by playing in the park or going for a walk so they can enjoy finding lots of new smells to sniff.

If possible, make arrangements for your pet to be looked after on moving day so that they do not get stressed or potentially escape when doors are open.

Alternatively, identify a safe place they are comfortable to stay in. This could be a crate, carrier or a room with their bed in where they will be happy to settle.

 On Moving Day

Your pet will sense that something different is going on and may become more anxious than usual if they’re left alone for long periods.

If you plan to leave your pet in a separate room whilst the removal team is at work, check in on them regularly so they know you are still nearby.

You can use puzzle feeders, scratching posts and treat dispensers to keep them entertained and always make sure they have plenty of fresh water available.

Pack your pet's belongings last so that you can find them easily and ensure that they have familiar items with them when you get to your new abode.

After the Move

On arrival at the property you should set up a space for your pet with their favourite possessions to help them feel relaxed in the new environment.

Try to keep your pet's routine as close to normal as possible including predictable meal times to provide consistency during this period of change.

When you feel it is the right time to allow your pet to roam, it is good to have something that smells familiar outside such as plants from your previous home.

Make sure you update your pet's microchip and ID tag with your new contact information. You also need to inform your vets of any change of address.

Moving house with your pet can feel like a challenge but at Britannia Bennetts we know they are an important part of the family and will do everything we can to ensure that the move is as stress free for your furry or feathered friend as possible.

National Love Your Pet Day focuses on giving our pets extra love and attention and it may be that it takes them some time to adjust to their new home so its important to remember to be patient with them and give them any reassurance they need.
