How to Pack Fragile Items for a Safe House Move

At Britannia Bennetts of Malvern we have been helping people move house since March 1987. Although interior design preferences have changed significantly over the years, each house move invariably includes fragile and delicate items.

Where we once helped people relocate their delicate porcelain animal figures and Eternal Beau dinner sets, we are now more likely to help move textured ceramic accessories and large Manhattan mirrors.

One thing that has remained the same throughout the years though, is our commitment to ensuring that we take care of all your belongings and ensure their safe transportation to their new home.

Here are some ways you can help protect your fragile items during a house move.

1) Use the right packing materials

Using flimsy old boxes is a false economy as it is important to ensure that any packing boxes used are suitable for the load that they will hold. We have a wide variety of packing materials available to buy including boxes in a variety of sizes. We also have wardrobe boxes which are specifically designed for moving or storing clothes while keeping them on hangers. They feature a built-in hanging rail, allowing clothes to be hung and transported without being folded, reducing wrinkles and creases on delicate garments.

We would also suggest you avoid using newspaper to package fragile items as the ink can transfer onto your belongings. We have packing paper and bubble wrap available, both of which provide protection and cushioning for delicate items. Finally our 'fragile' tape can be used to securely close boxes once packed and features bold, red text ensuring that everyone is aware of the need to handle the boxes with care, further reducing the risk of damage.

2) Pack boxes with care

When packing, you should select the items to be packed together carefully. At the base of the box, attempt to create a cushion using packing paper or items which can act as a shock absorber in this first layer. The heaviest, sturdy items such as plates should be packed at the bottom with more delicate items such as glasses placed on top. You need to ensure each item is individually wrapped and position them with only limited space around them to prevent movement during transportation. Any gaps should be filled with bubble wrap or packing paper so that the box feels full but not crammed.

3) Use the professionals

If you need help with your packing, we are able to provide a packing service which means that our specially trained staff will pack your whole home carefully and quickly. We understand that some items are very precious and often sentimental so we will protect these items by packing them to export standard, ensuring that everything arrives at your new home safely.

Whether you feel happy to pack your own belongings or would prefer to use our packing service, you can feel confident that with Britannia Bennetts of Malvern your belongings will be treated with the care they deserve ensuring you can toast your new home with your favourite glasses still intact!
