Planning Your Move to Austria

A move from the UK to Austria involves more than transporting furniture between two properties. The volume, access, packing requirements, customs documents, border arrangements, delivery canton and availability of the Austrian property must all be reviewed before collection.

Britannia Bennetts manages each stage from the initial survey to delivery. Your quotation explains the agreed services, the information required from you and how collection, customs, transport, storage and final delivery will be organised.

Your move can be combined with export packing, home packing services and secure self storage.

Visit the main International Removals page for information about our wider European and overseas services.

Services for Your Austria Move

01

Household Removals

We plan household moves around the size of your UK property, the volume being transported, access at both addresses and your destination in Austria.

Furniture can be protected and dismantled where suitable. Labelled boxes and furniture are placed according to your instructions when the consignment reaches the Austrian property.

02

Commercial Removals

Businesses moving furniture, equipment, records, stock or operational resources to Austria can request a commercial relocation plan based on the volume, timetable and handling requirements.

Commercial goods may require different declarations from personal household belongings, so the contents and intended use should be discussed before the quotation is confirmed.

03

Export Packing

Belongings travelling through Europe and crossing the Austrian border may require stronger protection than items moving locally. Our team can provide full packing, part packing or selected-item protection.

Fragile belongings, artwork, antiques and high-value pieces should be declared during the survey so the appropriate materials and handling requirements can be assessed.

04

Storage Before Export

Storage can help when your UK property must be vacated before the Austrian property is ready, when a tenancy has not started or when collection and delivery dates do not align.

Britannia Bennetts can collect your belongings, place them into secure storage at the Malvern facility and coordinate onward transport when you are ready for delivery.

Austrian Customs and Moving Paperwork

The United Kingdom is outside the European Union, so household belongings moving from Great Britain to Austria require customs planning, a suitable inventory and supporting documents.

People transferring their normal place of residence from a non-EU country may be able to import qualifying used personal property without import duty or import VAT when the applicable conditions are met. Austrian guidance states that the belongings generally need to have been used for at least six months, the customer normally needs to have lived outside the EU for at least twelve continuous months, and the goods must continue to be used for the same purpose after the move.

Depending on the circumstances, Austrian customs refers to forms ZBefr 2E or ZBefr 2aE. Evidence may include departure or registration documents, Austrian residence confirmation, an employment contract, tenancy agreement, mortgage document or school registration.

Britannia Bennetts can explain the removal-related information required and help prepare the moving inventory, but we do not provide legal, immigration, customs or tax advice. The relevant customs authority makes the final decision.

1

Customs Form

The appropriate Austrian household-effects form must be completed and signed with accurate personal, residence and consignment information.

2

Detailed Inventory

A clear inventory should describe the furniture, boxes, appliances, valuable items and other belongings entering Austria.

3

Proof of Residence

Customs may request evidence showing the previous residence outside the EU and the new normal place of residence in Austria.

4

Ownership and Use

Relief can depend on qualifying belongings having been used personally for at least six months before the previous residence ended.

5

Import Timescale

Eligible personal property is generally entered within twelve months of establishing the new normal place of residence, subject to the applicable rules and any approved exception.

6

Vehicles and Special Items

Vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, pets, plants, medicines, weapons, cultural goods and commercial stock can follow separate rules, restrictions, taxes or approval processes.

Review the latest guidance on the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance website and provide all requested documents within the agreed timescale.

Austria-Specific Delivery Planning

Vienna Access and Loading

Central Vienna can involve short-term loading areas, resident parking zones, tram routes, busy streets and limited space for a larger removal vehicle.

Provide the full address, floor number and photographs early so parking, carrying distance and vehicle access can be reviewed.

Historic Centres

Older areas of Salzburg, Graz, Innsbruck and other Austrian towns may have pedestrian zones, narrow approaches, restricted delivery hours and limited turning space.

Any permit, timed-access or local loading requirement should be identified before the delivery date.

Apartments and Lifts

Apartment buildings may have small lifts, shared entrances, protected communal areas and delivery rules set by a landlord or property manager.

Confirm lift dimensions, stair access, floor number and permitted working hours during the survey.

Alpine and Tirol Routes

Properties in Tirol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg state and other Alpine areas can involve steep roads, tunnels, snow, seasonal restrictions and limited access for a full-size vehicle.

Accurate directions and access photographs help us assess whether a smaller shuttle vehicle or additional handling is required.

Winter Conditions

Snowfall, mountain weather and temporary road restrictions can affect the final route and delivery window, particularly at higher elevations.

The moving plan should retain suitable flexibility when delivery is scheduled during the winter season.

Rural Properties

Rural homes can involve narrow lanes, gated access, low bridges, weight restrictions or a long carrying distance from the nearest suitable parking point.

Provide measurements and local access details so the crew, equipment and vehicle arrangement can be planned correctly.

How Your Belongings Can Travel

Smaller or Flexible Moves

Groupage or Part-Load

A smaller consignment may share vehicle capacity with other compatible removals travelling towards Austria.

This option can suit one-room moves, several pieces of furniture, personal effects, students or smaller households. Delivery dates normally require more flexibility because several consignments must be coordinated.

Larger or Time-Sensitive Moves

Dedicated Transport

A larger household or commercial move may be better suited to dedicated vehicle or container capacity.

The reserved capacity is planned around your consignment and route, allowing collection, customs and delivery to be organised around a more specific schedule. Suitability is confirmed after the survey.

How Your Austria Removal Works

Six practical stages take your move from the initial enquiry through to delivery at your new Austrian address.

We explain which information is required for the removal inventory and Austrian customs process.

You supply the requested identity, domicile, destination and supporting documents.

4

Our trained crew arrives with the agreed materials, packs where requested and protects furniture before loading.

Boxes are labelled according to the inventory and destination rooms.

5

Customs and Transit

The consignment follows the agreed European route and is presented for Austrian customs clearance with the required inventory and documents.

Estimated timing depends on the transport arrangement, customs process, route conditions and delivery location.

6

Delivery is coordinated to the confirmed address, subject to customs clearance, access arrangements and route availability.

Furniture and labelled boxes are placed in the rooms you specify.

UK to Austria Removals FAQs

Answers to common questions about planning removals from the UK to Austria.

1. How long does a removal from the UK to Austria take?

Timing depends on the UK collection address, Austrian destination, volume, transport arrangement, customs processing, route conditions and access at both properties. Part-load services normally require a wider delivery window than dedicated transport. An estimated schedule is provided after the move has been assessed.

2. What customs paperwork may be required?

The move may require an Austrian household-effects form, a detailed inventory and evidence relating to the previous residence, new Austrian residence, employment or tenancy. The exact documents and form depend on the customer's circumstances and are assessed by customs.

3. Can used household belongings qualify for duty relief?

Qualifying used personal property may be exempt from import duty and import VAT when the transfer-of-residence conditions are met. Austrian guidance generally refers to at least six months of previous use, at least twelve continuous months of residence outside the EU and continued use after import. Relief is not automatic.

4. Can Britannia Bennetts pack my belongings?

Yes. You can request full packing, partial packing or specialist protection for selected fragile and valuable items. The packing scope and materials are confirmed during the survey and included in the written quotation.

5. Can you store my belongings before delivery?

Yes. Britannia Bennetts offers secure storage at the Malvern facility when the UK property must be vacated before the Austrian property is ready. Collection, storage and onward transport can be included within one moving plan.

6. Can you deliver to Alpine or difficult-access properties?

These moves can be assessed, but steep roads, winter conditions, restricted vehicle access, narrow approaches or long carrying distances may require a smaller shuttle vehicle, additional labour or specialist equipment. Provide photographs, access measurements and the full address at enquiry stage.
