Planning Your Move to Italy

A move from the UK to Italy involves more than transporting furniture between two properties. The volume, access, packing requirements, customs documents, route, delivery region and availability of the Italian property must all be reviewed before collection.

Britannia Bennetts manages each stage from the initial survey to delivery. Your quotation explains the agreed services, the information required from you and how collection, customs, transport, storage and final delivery will be organised.

Your move can be combined with export packing, home packing services and secure self storage.

Visit the main International Removals page for information about our wider European and overseas services.

Services for Your Italy Move

01

Household Removals

We plan household moves around the size of your UK property, the volume being transported, access at both addresses and your destination in Italy.

Furniture can be protected and dismantled where suitable. Labelled boxes and furniture are placed according to your instructions when the consignment reaches the Italian property.

02

Commercial Removals

Businesses moving furniture, equipment, records, stock or operational resources to Italy can request a commercial relocation plan based on the volume, timetable and handling requirements.

Commercial goods may require different declarations from personal household belongings, so the contents and intended use should be discussed before the quotation is confirmed.

03

Export Packing

Belongings travelling through Europe may require stronger protection than items moving locally. Our team can provide full packing, part packing or selected-item protection.

Fragile belongings, artwork, antiques and high-value pieces should be declared during the survey so the appropriate materials and handling requirements can be assessed.

04

Storage Before Export

Storage can help when your UK property must be vacated before the Italian property is ready, when a tenancy has not started or when completion and collection dates do not align.

Britannia Bennetts can collect your belongings, place them into secure storage at the Malvern facility and coordinate onward transport when you are ready for delivery.

Italian Customs and Moving Paperwork

The United Kingdom is outside the European Union, so personal belongings entering Italy normally require customs formalities and supporting documents.

People transferring their normal residence from the UK to Italy may be able to obtain relief from customs duty and VAT on qualifying used personal belongings when the applicable conditions are met. Italian Customs states that, subject to exceptions, eligibility can include having lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months and having used the goods for at least six months before the move.

An application or authorisation may be required through the customs office responsible for the goods' place of arrival. The documents requested depend on the customer, goods, residence history and circumstances of the move.

Britannia Bennetts can explain the removal-related information required and help prepare the inventory, but we do not provide legal, immigration or tax advice.

1

Detailed Inventory

A clear inventory should list the personal and household belongings being imported into Italy. Unusual, restricted, commercial or high-value items should be identified separately.

2

Identity and Residence

Supporting evidence may be required to confirm identity, previous residence outside the EU and the transfer of normal residence to Italy.

3

Ownership and Previous Use

Relief can depend on how long the belongings have been owned and used before the move and whether they will continue to be used for the same purpose after arrival.

4

Customs Authorisation

The competent Italian customs office may require an application, supporting evidence and authorisation before qualifying belongings can be imported with relief.

5

Vehicles and Special Items

Vehicles, alcohol, tobacco, pets, plants, medicines, weapons, cultural goods and commercial stock may follow separate procedures, restrictions or taxes.

6

Current Requirements

Customs forms, accepted evidence, relief conditions and restricted-item rules can change. Current requirements should be checked before the collection date.

Review the latest information for people moving residence from the UK on the Italian Customs and Monopolies Agency website and provide all requested documents within the agreed timescale.

Italy-Specific Delivery Planning

ZTL and Historic Centres

Many Italian city centres have restricted traffic zones, known as ZTL areas, with controlled vehicle access and limited delivery times.

Provide the full address early so local access, permits and the distance from the vehicle to the property can be reviewed.

Apartments, Stairs and Lifts

Properties in Milan, Rome, Florence, Turin, Bologna and other cities may have compact lifts, narrow staircases, shared entrances and building rules.

Confirm the floor number, lift dimensions, permitted delivery times and whether a furniture hoist may be required.

Alpine and Northern Routes

Moves to northern Italy usually travel through established European road routes and Alpine crossings. Weather, traffic restrictions and tunnel operations can affect the planned journey.

Delivery windows should allow reasonable flexibility where route conditions change.

Rural and Hillside Properties

Homes in Tuscany, Umbria, Liguria and other rural or hillside areas may involve narrow lanes, steep approaches, gates, low branches or limited turning space.

Photographs, access measurements and accurate directions help us decide whether a smaller shuttle vehicle is needed.

Sicily and Sardinia

Deliveries to Sicily and Sardinia require additional ferry and final-route planning beyond a standard mainland move.

The island, postcode, property access and preferred dates should be supplied at enquiry stage so the suitable transport arrangement can be assessed.

Parking and Property Handover

Confirm parking availability, loading restrictions, key collection and whether a landlord, agent, building manager or responsible contact will be present.

Someone must be available to provide access and confirm where furniture and labelled boxes should be placed.

How Your Belongings Can Travel

Smaller or Flexible Moves

Groupage or Part-Load

A smaller consignment may share vehicle capacity with other compatible removals travelling towards Italy.

This option can suit one-room moves, several pieces of furniture, personal effects, students or smaller households. Delivery dates normally require more flexibility because several consignments must be coordinated.

Larger or Time-Sensitive Moves

Dedicated Transport

A larger household or commercial move may be better suited to dedicated vehicle or container capacity.

The reserved capacity is planned around your consignment and route, allowing collection and delivery to be organised around a more specific schedule. Suitability is confirmed after the survey.

How Your Italy Removal Works

Six practical stages take your move from the initial enquiry through to delivery at your new Italian address.

1

Book a Survey

Contact the team to arrange an in-home survey or Microsoft Teams video survey.

We assess the volume, property access, packing requirements, specialist belongings and destination.

We review the survey and provide a written quotation covering the agreed collection, packing, storage and transport services.

Customer responsibilities and any exclusions are explained before booking.

3

Prepare the Documents

We explain which information is required for the removal inventory and Italian customs process.

You supply the requested proof of identity, residence, destination and other supporting documents.

4

Pack and Load

Our trained crew arrives with the agreed materials, packs where requested and protects furniture before loading.

Boxes are labelled according to the inventory and destination rooms.

5

Customs and Transit

The consignment follows the agreed European route while the inventory and supporting documents are used for customs processing.

Estimated timing depends on the transport arrangement, customs process, route conditions and delivery location.

6

Delivery in Italy

Delivery is coordinated to the confirmed address, subject to customs clearance, access arrangements and route availability.

Furniture and labelled boxes are placed in the rooms you specify.

UK to Italy Removals FAQs

Answers to common questions about planning removals from the UK to Italy.

1. How long does a removal from the UK to Italy take?

Timing depends on the UK collection address, Italian destination, volume, transport arrangement, customs processing, route conditions and access at both properties. Groupage and part-load services normally require a wider delivery window than dedicated transport. An estimated schedule is provided after the move has been assessed.

2. What customs paperwork is required?

Personal belongings normally require an import declaration, detailed inventory and supporting evidence relating to identity, previous residence, the transfer to Italy and ownership or previous use of the goods. Exact requirements depend on your circumstances and should be confirmed before collection.

3. Can household belongings qualify for duty and VAT relief?

Qualifying used personal belongings may be eligible for transfer-of-residence relief when the applicable conditions are met. Italian Customs notes conditions including a period of residence outside the EU and previous use of the belongings. Relief is not automatic, and the competent customs office makes the final decision.

4. Can Britannia Bennetts pack my belongings?

Yes. You can request full packing, partial packing or specialist protection for selected fragile and valuable items. The packing scope and materials are confirmed during the survey and included in the written quotation.

5. Can you store my belongings before delivery?

Yes. Britannia Bennetts offers secure storage at the Malvern facility when the UK property must be vacated before the Italian property is ready. Collection, storage and onward transport can be included within one moving plan.

6. Can you deliver to ZTL zones, rural homes or Italian islands?

These moves can be assessed, but they may require permits, a furniture hoist, a smaller shuttle vehicle, ferry planning or additional handling. Provide the full address, photographs, floor details, access measurements and parking information at enquiry stage so the suitable delivery arrangement can be confirmed.
