With Bonfire Night and Remembrance Day both in November, there is a lot we need to remember this month.
However, when you are moving house, we know there are some things that people are likely to forget.
At Britannia Bennetts we have been helping people move home for almost forty years so can help you have a moving day that is memorable for all the right reasons. Here are our top tips for a better house move:
1) Create a Detailed Moving Plan
As soon as you sell your home, start thinking about the moving process and the tasks you need to complete. Do you need to sort through your loft or garage? Will you need childcare or someone to help with pets on moving day? Who do you need to tell about your change of address?
Break down the moving process into smaller tasks and assign estimated deadlines when they need to be completed. Monitor your progress with a checklist and use our Removal Guide for reminders of what needs to be done.
2) Pack Strategically
When packing your belongings, use this as an opportunity to declutter and only pack things that you want to take with you to your new home. It can be difficult to decide what to take so if you have things that you are not ready to part with, you could consider using self storage facilities until you are sure whether you have a place for them in your new home.
Make a list of items to be moved which will need particular care and pack boxes room by room to make unpacking easier. All boxes should be labelled clearly with its contents and the room it belongs in, making it easier for our removal crew to put them where you need them to be.
We also offer a packing service where our specially trained staff pack your whole home carefully and quickly, using sturdy boxes and padded covers to protect your household contents. We understand that belongings may be sentimental and always take the best care to ensure everything arrives at your new home safely. 3) Moving Day Survival Box
After your old home is packed and moving day arrives there is a lot to think about. At Britannia Bennetts we have found that having some essentials in a moving day survival box helps calm the first few hours spent in your new home. The box should have the basic essential items that you will need for the first night to make moving day more organised and less stressful. This would include important documents and medication but also phone chargers and cables.
Taking a change of clothes, snacks and toiletries for each family member relieves the pressure to start unpacking as soon as you arrive. Depending on the time that you arrive at your new home, you may prefer to leave the majority of sorting until the following day. Making sure you can locate some pyjamas and a toothbrush easily will help relieve the pressure to unpack and allow you to feel settled straight away.
Having a kettle, tea, coffee, sugar and mugs easily available means you can put the kettle on and offer refreshments as soon as you arrive at your new home. You should also pack essentials such as toilet roll, cleaning products and bin bags. At this time of year, when it gets dark early, it can be helpful to have a flashlight as well in case the previous owner has taken any light fittings or bulbs with them. Having a survival box means that your essentials are in one place rather than split across several other boxes in different rooms.
